Leaving her to a governess, Malvika’s bureaucrat father and socialite mother had no time to love her or understand the yearnings and pain that comes with growing up. She falls in love with her teacher Bhupen but he marries her friend Savita. Her father’s sudden death forces Malvika and her mother to move to ‘Nirmal Kunj’, their ancestral home in Mussoorie. Nirmal Kunj is filled with memories of her grandfather, Lala Goverdhan and his love for the dancing girl, Johar Bai. Malvika’s mother marries Pierre, a French artist and goes away with him to Paris.
